PIPE COATING FACILITY INCREASES THROUGHPUT BY 50%

Tiger SiC strip discs helped a pipe coating facility reduce cost per part and improve cleaning efficiency during a real-world  Weiler Consumable Productivity evaluation.

In a 5-minute side-by-side production test, Tiger SiC cleaned 6 pipe end cap couplings compared to 4 with the competitive product.

In this pipe coating application, the facility used strip discs to clean pipe end cap couplings before coating. Weiler evaluated Tiger SiC strip discs through a Weiler Consumable Productivity evaluation to measure cleaning throughput, abrasive usage, and cost per part under real production conditions.

The Challenge: Reducing Abrasive Cost in Pipe Coupling Cleaning

The facility wanted to reduce abrasive costs in a cleaning operation for pipe end cap couplings. The opportunity was to improve productivity while maintaining consistent surface preparation before coating.

The Solution: Tiger SiC Strip Discs Validated Through WCP

Weiler conducted an on-site evaluation through the Weiler Consumable Productivity program. Rather than simply quoting a lower-cost product, the team tested Tiger SiC directly against the current product under production conditions.

As a non-woven silicon carbide strip disc, Tiger SiC provided the cleaning speed and surface contact needed for this pipe coupling application.

Test Parameters from the WCP Evaluation

Application: Cleaning pipe end cap couplings

Tool: Metabo 4.5 in. angle grinder

Material: Cold rolled mild steel

Test Time: 5 minutes

The Result: Lower Cost per Part and Reduced Disc Usage

During the timed test, Tiger SiC cleaned 6 parts in the same 5-minute window in which the competitive product cleaned 4 parts. The WCP evaluation showed that switching to Tiger SiC strip discs improved cleaning productivity while reducing abrasive consumption and cost per part.

Cost per part reduced: $4.04 to $2.45

Annual abrasive savings: $13,723

Disc usage reduced: 2,160 to 1,440 annually

A Global Abrasives Partner Focused on Mutual Success

At Weiler Abrasives, our experience dates back to 1898 when Joseph E. Weiler began manufacturing brushes for the jewelry industry in Pforzheim, Germany. Since then, we’ve grown and evolved into a global manufacturer serving customers in over 80 countries with nearly 1,500 employees around the world.

“While the company has grown and expanded significantly since those humble beginnings, our commitment to developing long-term partnerships with customers, co-workers, and community hasn’t changed. We like to call that our 3C’s.” Chris Weiler, Executive Chairman.

Whether you are looking to improve your surface conditioning processesoptimize your consumable spend, or train your team on the safe and proper use of abrasives and brushes, Weiler has the people and expertise to help you achieve your goals.
