The facility wanted to reduce abrasive costs in a cleaning operation for pipe end cap couplings. The opportunity was to improve productivity while maintaining consistent surface preparation before coating.

The Solution: Tiger SiC Strip Discs Validated Through WCP

Weiler conducted an on-site evaluation through the Weiler Consumable Productivity program. Rather than simply quoting a lower-cost product, the team tested Tiger SiC directly against the current product under production conditions.

As a non-woven silicon carbide strip disc, Tiger SiC provided the cleaning speed and surface contact needed for this pipe coupling application.

Test Parameters from the WCP Evaluation

Application: Cleaning pipe end cap couplings

Tool: Metabo 4.5 in. angle grinder

Material: Cold rolled mild steel

Test Time: 5 minutes

 

The Result: Lower Cost per Part and Reduced Disc Usage

During the timed test, Tiger SiC cleaned 6 parts in the same 5-minute window in which the competitive product cleaned 4 parts. The WCP evaluation showed that switching to Tiger SiC strip discs improved cleaning productivity while reducing abrasive consumption and cost per part.

Cost per part reduced: $4.04 to $2.45
