THE CHALLENGE
Look Beyond the Abrasive
The customer was already using a premium 36-grit ceramic resin fiber disc from a major competitor. But when we took a closer look at their grinding process, we saw an opportunity beyond the abrasive itself.
We spent time on the floor, watching operators grind bevels, create uniform edges, and clean up welds after assembly.We identified something that was previously overlooked: the backing pad wasn't right for the ceramic abrasive.
Ceramic abrasive needs sufficient pressure to fracture the grain and expose fresh cutting edges. Without the proper backing pad, the abrasive wasn't being used to its full potential. Discs could load, shortening usable life and increasing consumption.
We recommended a harder backing pad better suited to the application and worked with the team on grinding technique.

Better Performance Starts with the Process
We brought in our 3D MAX Ceramic Resin Fiber Disc and tested it against their current abrasive solution.
Testing showed better grain retention and demonstrated roughly 1.5 times longer life with 3D MAX. Operators noticed the difference, too. They reported smoother grinding performance and preferred the scuff pattern 3D MAX left on the workpiece.
